2022 has seen Laptops4Learning continue our work with Refugee Connections, which has also led to us delivering 132 devices to Afghan children in bridging hotels, made possible by surplus tech provided by our partners, which we have repaired, refurbished and made available for social good.
Our network of business partners has been strengthened by the addition of two new major companies this month, and we very much look forward to this enabling us to expand the reach of whom we can help.
We have continued to donate to those in need to help with online learning, with a laptop going to the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire branch of Barnardo’s Child and Family Centres, who have said that it will make a real difference to a young mum, helping her with online learning to get her back into employment. We have also donated a laptop to the Richmond Rugby Community Department, again destined to help a young mum who needs it for online learning.
We are now part of the steering group for the Cambridgeshire Digital Partnership (CDP), a network set up to improve digital inclusion across Cambridgeshire. We aim to help by encouraging businesses to have their tech repaired and refurbished for environmental and social good, helping to meet needs identified across Cambridgeshire. The CDP held its first online network event last week, which was very valuable in getting feedback to shape how the partnership works to meet the needs of organisations and individuals.
At Laptops4Learning, our current projects include a further 5 mobile telephones being donated to It Takes a City, who do great work across Cambridge to help end rough sleeping due to homelessness. Also, following on from donations we made last year through Citizens:MK, we are looking at the possibility of helping them organise a “Digital Amnesty” across the Oxford Diocese, where churches could act as drop-off points for people to leave surplus tech to be repaired, refurbished and got out to where they are needed in the local community.
Digital inequality cuts right across our society and the needs are both diverse and very widespread. Moreover, refurbishing tech for reuse brings great environmental benefits for the whole of society.
